Merry Christmas, 1972

In 1972 Sears ran a 32 page insert in the Salt Lake papers for the Christmas sales. A newly-married Barbara Sweat was working in the ad department for Sears. What follows is the poem she wrote for that insert, with a sample of the products for sale. Hope you enjoy it. (Sears may sue me for this, but I had Barb's permission.)

OH my gosh dad, that was a blast to read. thanks for finding it! I liked looking at the old-school photos and the prices of things too - hard to believe it's been 36 years since we wrote that. My favorite rhyme is still "render and blender:)"
Merry 19 days before Christmas!

I think Barb may have missed her calling in life. She would've made an awesome marketing director!

I can't believe how little washers and dryers have changed in the last 36 years. And I loved the "surfer shirt." :)

I think my favorite rhyme is the "deers and Sears" bit.

That's hilarious! I remember my mom telling me about some of the stuff she did while working at Sears, but it's much better to actually read it and see the whole ad. The pictures of the items they're selling are just classic.

What fun! I had no idea Barbie worked as a copywriter. How glamorous!

Mom, this is priceless. Thanks Grandpa for posting it! And I'd already picked out "render and blender" as MY favorite rhyme before reading the comments.

Who knows what heights of advertising you could have reached had *I* not come along in 1972? You could have been like Darrin on Bewitched!!

Oh what fun to read! Barbie, you're gifted and talented and a scream.

The first two things I thought to say before I read the comments were "that's priceless" and also "you've missed your calling!" You can go back! Mail this to Sears and tell them things haven't been the same without you. Who knows, you may keep the company from going under with that kind of talent. My all-time favorite rhyme is still "...if he had his way" "...you should see his gladioli-ay". Woops, that's not Sears' copy. I remember Mrs. Wyatt laughing so hard at that line. Wow. We've gotta stop this rhymin' - I mean it. Anybody got a peanut? Dad: What's that from?
