True gall
The gall of some people!!!
In this case, the Coen Brothers.
Many of their movies have been very entertaining, but this time they've gone too far!
For people of my generation, the most iconic figure in western movies is....
See? I don't even have to tell you who it is. You know already.
He made some outstanding westerns over a span of 30 or more years and finally won an Academy Award
as best actor in one of them. No one, absolutely no one, could have played that role better.
You have only to look at him as the character and it brings the whole movie to life.
John Wayne IS Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit". One of the most memorable roles in his long career.
If you only saw it once, you will always remember him on his horse, with the reins in his mouth,
swinging a rifle in both hands, as he charges toward the band of bad guys, yellling "Fill your hands
you sons of b......" (Somehow, when the Duke said it, it didn't sound like swearing.)
Now the Coen Brothers have decided to re-make the movie. This time with .....are you ready
That's right, Jeff Bridges.
C'mon, give me a break.
I can only hope the new version is a complete flop with the critics and loses a bundle of money for the Coen Brothers and anyone else who is involved in this travesty.
Would you like to see anyone else but Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig in "Pride of the Yankees"?
Anyone but Peter O'Toole as "Lawrence of Arabia"?
Anyone but Omar Sharif as "Doctor Zhivago"?
Anyone but Robert Preston as "The Music Man"? (Okay, they tried Matthew Broderick and it was awful.)
I can see it all now:
Coming soon to a theatre near you: "Gone With the Wind", with Brad Pitt as Rhet Butler and Angelina Jolie as Scarlett O'Hara.

How do you feel about the Tron sequel, Grandpa? :) I hear Jeff Bridges is involved in that as well!
A travesty! I wish I'd seen more of your list of iconic movies so I could get equally indignant. The thing with Jeff Bridges is that he's so NICE. It's hard to believe he'd ever hurt anybody but himself (he is good at being a little self-destructive on film.) Should be interesting to see how this one ends up being received. I'll be extra suspicious in your honor.
Ben-
Sequals I can live with, especially when they keep the same actors in the roles (Bridges was in the 1982 "Tron", also). That's like Harrison Ford in all the Indiana Jones pictures, or
Michael J. Fox in the "Back to the Future" ones.
It's when they try to pass off Adam Sandler in "Mr. Deeds"(2002) thinking they can repeat the success of Gary Cooper in "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" (1936). Leonard Maltin (aka my guru)says it all in his ratings: "Mr Deeds Goes to Town" **** "Mr. Deeds"
BOMB. Maltin's review ends with this: "You don't have to know Frank Capra's 1936 classic to know this one stinks;it doesn't even believe in its own story."
I wouldn't put it past anyone in Hollywood to do a Gone with the Wind remake with Brangelina. Now excuse me while I go rent ALL of the movies on your list of classics, I have some catching up to do...
Grandpa, I have bad news for you. I happened to see the trailer for the new True Grit last night with Angie at the movies and it is going to ROCK! I'm not a huge Jeff Bridges fan but I am a Coen Brothers, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Western fan and based on the 3 minutes of footage we saw last night I think it's going to deliver.
I will have to rent and watch the original in the meantime so that I can be adequately prepared to judge but this is where I have more bad news. I hate to paint with too broad of a brush but old movies are really boring and hard to watch. Whenever I pass by the AMC channel on Saturday afternoons and see an old western I think, " I should really watch some of this old movie and try to enjoy it's timeless take on the American West" but before I can finish that sentence I've fallen asleep. Maybe it's all the white guys dressed as indians, (where there no American Indian actors in the 50's?) or the long sweeping shots of cowboys riding their horses farther and farther and farther into the distance, (we get it already, next scene please.) It's a matter of pace but it's also just a matter of Acting (!). Everything was so subdued. It must have been the overall lack of caffeine and energy drinks at the time.
So in conclusion, remakes typically don't work very well even though the latest Star Trek reinvention is an instant classic and even 3:10 from Yuma from a couple years back was fairly entertaining. I am pretty sure that someday I will be sitting where you are sitting when they announce that Justin Bieber has been cast as the Preacher in Pale Rider. And I can't wait to talk to you a couple of days after Christmas to see how you liked the movie.

Forrest -
I gave up long ago trying to convert the MTV generation to the slower pace of classic movies. For today's audience if there isn't a different shot every 2 or 3 seconds
they think things are dragging.
Incidentally, I watched the preview clip of the Coens' "True Grit"...interesting, but it seemed to be dark and intense.
Oh well; to each his/her own.
Tony and Cindy went to the Jelly Belly factory while they were in San Francisco and took a picture of a stunning portrait of John Wayne done all in different hues of Jelly Bean!

who kind of straddles the divide between you and Forrest, although I know Forrest wouldn't agree and I lean more toward the old than the new because I lean more toward the old than the new. I remember I once dared to say something negative about John Wayne to you and realized quickly that I was treading on holy ground!
Barb
If we had John Wayne in the White House instaed of the present intruder, we"d all be better off!
Some people just don't understand the subtleties and romance of the old movies. Boring? Ha! It's artistic!
(Grandpa, can I take Forrest's place in the will now? Of course, I have never actually seen a John Wayne or any pre-1980 movie and I have no idea who Jeff Bridges is, but let's not waste time dwelling on the details.)
:)
Dave-
There is no director of westerns to beat John Ford. You're right, the classic oldies are much more artistic.
That being agreed upon, I need to add that we are doing our best to spend our children's inheritance.Hang on to your retirement program.
There's only one John Wayne. Jeff Bridges looks like a pixie compared to him. When I lived in Paris with Michele and her mother they had old John Wayne westerns on French television all the time. Dubbed in French. I have never laughed so hard as when I heard a high-pitched French male voice say, in perfect French "Ecoutez, et ecoutez bien!" dubbed over John Wayne mouthing his macho, grammatically incorrect "listen an' listen good."
